Apricorn trees

Apricorns turn into Poké Balls at Kurt’s workshop in Azalea Town, so the colour of a tree decides which balls you can farm. The colour of each tree is fixed: it never changes with the day, the time or your save. The trees and their colours come from the game’s own map and script data, and each one was confirmed by picking from it in an emulator. The directions were read from screenshots of each spot, and several of the harder trees were walked from the nearest entrance.

35 trees can be picked. Only two need Surf: the Route 35 tree and the Route 43 tree. Everything else can be reached on foot, with no HM, though some are tucked behind one-way ledges.

The game keeps one “picked or not” record per tree type, and several trees share one. Picking from one empties all of its twins. The twins are:

Twin group Trees
A (Yellow) Route 2 (south), Route 6, Violet City
B (Blue) Route 18, Route 36
C (Pink) Route 30 (Mr. Pokémon’s house), Vermilion City
D (Green) Route 25, Route 29
E (Black) Route 9, Route 37
F (White) Route 4, Azalea Town

So take one Apricorn from each group, then do the rest of the list. Trees that are not in a group are separate.

Picked trees refill when the game clock naturally rolls over from 11:59 p.m. to midnight, just like Apricorn Ball crafting. You do not need to wait a full 24 hours after picking: collect before midnight, let the clock tick over, then collect again. For repeated farming, set the clock to 11:59 p.m. and let it naturally reach midnight each time.

Where How to find it
Route 1 In a walled-in strip on the west side, south of the Viridian City gatehouse. From the gatehouse walk about 5 steps south, 4 west and 4 south, then hop south over the one-way ledge and walk west along the strip to the cliff. A youngster stands near it. The ledge is the only way in.
Route 9 (group E) On a sandy shelf in the eastern part of the route, a few steps from the Route 10 Pokémon Center side. Two or three trainers stand on the shelf, and the tree is just below a small one-way ledge, with a short stairway beside it.
Route 31 On the north side of the sandy path, about 20 steps east of the Violet City gatehouse and a good dozen steps past the signpost, in a gap in the tree line just north of a small ledge.
Route 37 (group E) South of Ecruteak City’s south gate, in a clearing on the east side of the path with a flower bed on its west edge. The path continues south through tall grass beside the flowers.
Route 43 On the west bank of the river that runs down the route, in a small opening in the forest just north of a rocky outcrop. Needs Surf: cross the river from the path on the east side.
Where How to find it
Route 2 (north) Right beside the small Route 2 house, just east of its door, about 20 steps south of the Diglett’s Cave entrance.
Route 30 (group C) In the yard on the west side of Mr. Pokémon’s house (the grey-roofed house with the red mailbox), just west of the mailbox.
Route 33 South-east of the Union Cave entrance, at the far east end of the grassy strip below the rocks, past the tall grass and next to the east cliff wall. A lady trainer stands close.
Vermilion City (group C) Inside the fenced rocky garden in the north-east of town. The tree is on the garden’s east side, in its upper half, just below the two big boulders and against the iron fence. A trainer and a Pokémon stand nearby. From the Pokémon Center, head east along the main street.
Where How to find it
Route 2 (south), group A At the southern end of the route, in a small clearing east of the main path, just below a row of one-way ledges and a patch of flowers. Two trainers stand close by.
Route 6, group A On a grassy strip west of the Saffron-side gatehouse, between a row of trees to the north and a one-way ledge to the south. The tree is at its west end, about 12 steps from the gatehouse.
Route 8 At the Lavender Town end of the route, in a narrow strip at the foot of the north cliff, north of the paved road and behind a column of trees, about 15 steps west of the Lavender Town Pokémon Center and Poké Mart.
Route 42 In a small forest clearing about 9 steps south of the middle Mt. Mortar entrance, with a trainer standing beside it.
Route 45 (south) At the south end of the route, just north-east of the wooden bridge over the river, among flowers and below a low ledge.
Violet City, group A At the south-west of town, on the east side of the forest path just south of the town square, where it narrows between two rows of trees, about 12 steps west of the purple-roofed house.
Where How to find it
Route 18, group B On the small fenced grassy shore at the west end of the route, just below the ramp of the Cycling Road bridge, at the south-west corner of the white fence. A bald man stands next to it.
Route 26 Beside the small house in the north of the route, on its west side, to the left of the door.
Route 36, group B In a small clearing about 8 steps east of the west gatehouse, in a nook at the north edge against the trees, a few steps north-east of the sign.
Viridian City In the south-east of town, at the edge of the eastern tree wall just east of the bend in the paved road, about 15 steps north-east of the Route 1 gatehouse.
Pewter City On the grass terrace in the north-east of town, above and east of the Museum of Science and a little north-east of the grey-roofed house. The White tree is two steps east of it. Take the stairs at the terrace’s east end.
Where How to find it
Route 7 In a small gap in the tree line just north of the path, about 15 steps west of the Saffron-side gatehouse, with a wooden fence and a rocky ledge on its west side.
Route 25, group D On the raised grassy shelf under the north cliff, at the west end of a block of tall grass, where the sandy path forks. A ledge separates the shelf from the path. The Cerulean Cape festival crowd stands on the path further east, and the way up to the shelf from there was not confirmed step by step.
Route 29, group D In the raised grass clearing among the trees north of the main path, about 26 steps west of the Route 46 gatehouse. Uncle Apricorn stands next to the tree. Enter from the tall grass on the clearing’s east side.
Route 30 Beside the Apricorn house, at the front-left (west) of the pink-roofed house, next to the lake and the wooden fence posts.
Route 35 At the north-west corner of the pond, on a grassy bank walled in by forest on the other sides. Needs Surf: from the sandy east side of the pond, below the white fence, surf west along the pond’s north edge. A Camper challenges you on the way in from the north gate.
Route 39 Beside MooMoo Farm, just east of the big red-roofed log farmhouse, on the grass between the house and the path.
Route 45 (shelf) On a narrow grassy shelf on the east side of the route, about two-thirds of the way down, with a tall-grass field just below. Reach it from the north: leave the Dark Cave at the north end and go south, hopping over about nine one-way ledges. There is no way in from the south and no way back up, so leave over the ledge at its south side. No HM needed. A man in the narrow part of the path has to be walked around.
Route 46 On the upper shelf at the foot of the mountain face, about 11 steps west of the Dark Cave entrance, between two small clusters of trees.
Where How to find it
Route 44 On the grassy patch just west of the end of the wooden bridge, beside a flower bed. A hiker stands a few steps north.
Viridian City On the east edge of town in a gap in the tree wall, about 9 steps east and 6 north of the Poké Mart door, south-east of the Gym and beside some flowers.
Fuchsia City In the garden just east of the Poké Mart, on the east side of the two hedged fountain gardens, in a nook next to the tree line.
Where How to find it
Route 4, group F East of Mt. Moon, at the top of a short column of three trees in the narrow grassy pass at the foot of the cliff wall, with the fenced sand lot a few steps to the east.
Route 38 In a small clearing in the tall grass in the middle of the route, in a nook among four trees. Magician Lott, the Apricorn picker, stands directly south of it.
Pewter City On the same north-east terrace as the Blue tree, two steps east of it.
Azalea Town, group F Right next to Kurt’s house, just west of its door, near the Azalea gatehouse.
  • Two more trees exist in the game’s files but never appear in normal play (one on Route 4, one in a cave in Fuchsia City), so they are not listed.
  • Not tested: the exact route up to the Route 25 shelf during the festival.
  • The Route 29 tree and the Route 38 tree match what the quest guide already says about Uncle Apricorn and Magician Lott.
