Download the English patch

The official site of the Origin HeartGold English translation. Patches are published only on our GitHub releases. Current English patch: v1.0.0-rc8, released (release notes, all changes).

Drop your own Pokémon HeartGold Version (USA) file below, as a .nds or a .zip, and you get Origin HeartGold (起源心金) v4.0.3 in English back. The page checks your file, downloads the patch published with this site and applies it for you. You don’t need to download the patch, find a patching tool or unzip anything.

Checking for the latest patch…

Your browser ran out of memory

Patching needs a few hundred MB of free memory, and this browser couldn't get it. Your file is fine and nothing was changed.

  • Close other tabs and apps, then try again.
  • On a phone or tablet, try a computer instead.
  • Still failing? Patch by hand with the steps on this page.
  • Nothing is uploaded. Everything happens in your browser tab. Your file never leaves your device; the page only downloads the patch from this website.
  • Keep your original file. The patcher makes a new file and never changes yours. You need the original again for every new version of the patch.
  • Checked twice. The page only patches a clean HeartGold (USA) dump, CRC32 C180A0E9, and checks the finished game against the SHA-1 published with the release before it lets you save it.
  • Then play the saved .nds in an emulator. The patch is tested in melonDS; other emulators haven’t been tested. Playing on a real DS, DSi or 3DS? See the FAQ. More help is on the How to use this guide page.

Version v1.0.0-rc8 (4.0.3-RC8 inside the game) is a release candidate. It is not yet tested on real hardware. Earlier releases are on the changelog; the full technical list is in the changelog on GitHub.

  • Freezes fixed: stepping under the arch in front of the stairs on Victory Road (reported on a real DS Lite), the weekday siblings’ ribbon scene, the Pallet Town photographer when none of your Pokémon can fight, losing to Giovanni at the Mt. Silver hot spring, and scripted Double Battles when you have fewer than two Pokémon (such as the Department Store’s 6F).
  • Money and quantities: the Goldenrod fortune teller, the younger Haircut Brother and the S.S. Anne shop now check for the price they charge; the Game Corner’s “500 coins” option gives 500 coins. Rewards of several items say how many you got (“Obtained Ultra Ball x2!”).
  • Story fixes: the Ilex Forest bug hunt can no longer set off the Forest of Time scenes early, the Cynthia romance scenes take the Snow Mail they ask for, Petilil holding a Black Belt evolves straight into Hisuian Lilligant, the Blackthorn tutor teaches Play Rough and the Saffron dojo tutor always teaches Volt Switch. The Ice Stone and the Dragon Scale can be used from the Bag again, so the Pokémon that evolve with them can evolve.
  • Names and sprites: the player’s name no longer shows up blank in dozens of lines, and 36 stationary overworld Pokémon are drawn as the species the text and cry name.
  • Battles: fainting Pokémon cry again and moves that deal damage play the hit sound.
  • Difficulty settings: ITEMS LIMITED is renamed DEFAULT and now follows the original hack’s battle-item rules (Potions included); ALL still adds twenty more medicines. SHARE OFF no longer disables a held Exp. Share, and CAP, SHARE and ITEMS now also apply in story battles you can lose. See Difficulty settings.
  • Text fixes: the Route 21 Trainer’s Lairon, the Celadon Skitty boy’s “Fluffy Tail” and the Rock Tunnel tutor (who now names Pollen Puff, the move he teaches).

Fixes marked “Fixed in rc8” on the Known issues page are the ones above.

If the patcher doesn’t work for you: patch by hand

You can do the same thing with any xdelta patcher:

  1. Download the .xdelta patch from the newest release on GitHub. Its README.txt lists the SHA-1 your patched game should have.

  2. If your HeartGold file is zipped, unzip it first.

  3. Open xdelta-wasm, another in-browser patcher. Choose your HeartGold .nds as the source file and the .xdelta as the patch, apply it and save the new .nds.

  4. Or use xdelta3 from a terminal (replace the patch name with the file you downloaded):

    Terminal window
    xdelta3 -d -s "Pokemon - HeartGold Version (USA).nds" Origin_HeartGold_v4.0.3_EN_<version>.xdelta Origin_HeartGold_EN.nds

The page computes your file’s CRC32 and SHA-1 (unpacking a .zip first with your browser’s built-in decompression), downloads the patch published with this website and applies it with xdelta3 compiled to WebAssembly by xdelta-wasm, inside a background worker in your browser tab. Both are open source under the Apache License 2.0; see the credits.
