Chapter 29: League HQ Rounds 2 and 3

Report round 1 to the Trainer Affairs desk and it hands out round 2, then round 3. Round 2 stays in Kanto: a museum exhibition in Pewter City and the water ballet at the Cerulean Gym, which leads to the Seafoam Islands. Round 3 sends you all over Johto: the Jade Orb in Violet City, legendary tracks near New Bark Town and Cherrygrove City, people in black in Ilex Forest and ghostly rumours at MooMoo Farm.

Main quest in this chapter: finish every lead of round 2, report, then finish every lead of round 3 and report again.

Temporary effects to know about: taking the round-3 order makes the MooMoo Farm Miltank fall sick (the Sunflora old lady stops talking until you cure them), and while the golden trophy is missing in Violet City the runner will not do his Rapidash request. If you want the romance route, do the Goldenrod love reading before the Dream World (Chapter 20).

Round 2: Pewter Museum and the Cerulean Gym. The desk sends you to suspicious people at the Pewter Museum exhibition and to strangers at the Cerulean Gym water ballet. At the Gym, Archie steals Misty’s Blue Orb and sends it to the Seafoam Islands. In the deep chamber at the Seafoam Islands, Misty joins you for a Multi Battle against two Grunts (Lv. 63-65). Then Lawrence has Moltres melt the ice and Articuno is taken: a second Multi Battle against Executive Lawrence (Lv. 87-90) and a Grunt. Archie summons Kyogre with the Blue Orb and escapes with it. This closes for good: the Articuno battle and its TM14 Blizzard (Chapter 10); Articuno itself returns after Lance’s visit (Chapter 33). The melted ice walls come back, so melt them yourself to reach the Blue Orb pedestal at the north end.

The Pewter Museum exhibition has no quest of its own (guide/07 q-0192 round table; questions file).

Round 3: the Violet Gym and the Jade Orb. Talk to Falkner in the Violet Gym: a guard reports that the marathon runner’s golden trophy was stolen. The runner’s house is at the south end of town; a scene plays there and word arrives that former Leader Verdell has taken something from the Gym. Back in the Gym, Falkner tells you the Jade Orb is gone. That counts as the Violet lead.

Round 3: legendary tracks at New Bark Town and Cherrygrove City. Ask Gold and Crystal. In New Bark Town you and Gold fight Cassidy and Butch in a Multi Battle before Raikou picks Gold as its Trainer; in Cherrygrove, Suicune picks Crystal after her duel with Eusine. These scenes have no quest of their own.

Round 3: Ilex Forest and the Forest of Time. The old ranger by the path into the Forest of Time now plays the scene: a boy, Sammy, falls out of the past and the injured Celebi needs 10 Fresh Water, 10 Sitrus Berries and a lead Pokémon that can make light (Staryu, Starmie, Chinchou, Lanturn, Ampharos, Volbeat or Clamperl). Heal Celebi, hold off two Grunts and follow the five-exit route through the forest (top-middle, top-middle, top-right, top-left, top-middle). At the end Executive Marauder (Lv. 89-90) attacks twice. The reward is a Leaf Stone, a Max Elixir and a PP Max. Afterwards the shrine at the north end of the forest lets you receive Shaymin (Gracidea and a Leafeon lead, between 8:00 and 19:59) and then Celebi (Shaymin lead, between 20:00 and 7:59).

guide/09 q-0245 (round 3; ‘before it she only tells the Celebi legend’), q-0365 (the five-exit route; the last exit loops back while you fetch the medicine and from Bugsy’s Honey until the Sammy chapter starts), q-0246 (after the Sammy chapter; Gracidea from the Cinnabar lab; one Shaymin and one Celebi per game).

Round 3: MooMoo Farm. The round-3 order made the Miltank sick: the farmer now asks for help. Say Yes, go into the west stable room and walk to the back wall. Will and Karen open a rift and you are pulled into the Dream World (partner choice, a Double Battle against Will and Karen, then the way back). Talk to the farmer again afterwards: he gives you one Moomoo Milk, and the farm is back to normal for good. Report round 3 to the desk when all four leads are done.

The Dream World and the romance partner choice: guide/09 romance route entry. Closes q-0266: the love reading (and the romance route) must be done before this step; the fortune-teller stops offering it once you have fought Will and Karen in the Dream World (guide/09 q-0266 step 1).

Seafoam Islands: Team Rocket and Kyogre (League HQ investigation), and catching Kyogre

Section titled “Seafoam Islands: Team Rocket and Kyogre (League HQ investigation), and catching Kyogre”

Seafoam Islands Main quest

The Kyogre catch itself comes after the final Hall of Fame (postgame). Melt the ice walls yourself (Magcargo or Moltres in the lead) to reach the pedestal. Executive Lawrence’s team is Lv. 87-90.

Where: the same deep chamber. A Blue Orb pedestal lies at the far north end, past Articuno’s spot.

Who gets it / when: during the League HQ investigation (round 2, the Cerulean Gym lead), after the Silver Conference. After the Cerulean Gym scene where Archie steals Misty’s Blue Orb and sends it to the Seafoam Islands, Misty goes ahead. The researcher then says a group rushed down to catch Articuno and Kyogre.

How it works:

  1. Walk a couple of steps past the researcher into the chamber. Misty joins you for a Multi Battle against two Grunts (Lv. 63–65).
  2. Lawrence has Moltres melt the ice. Articuno is taken. Second Multi Battle with Misty against Executive Lawrence (Moltres 90, Zapdos 90, Pidgeot 88, Aerodactyl 88, Staraptor 88, Noctowl 87) and a Grunt (Raichu 65, Claydol 64, Murkrow 63). Losing whites you out; the scene replays.
  3. Archie summons Kyogre with the Blue Orb and escapes with it. You can’t stop him. If this was your last lead, you’re told to report to League HQ; otherwise “check somewhere else”.
  4. Catching Kyogre (after the final Hall of Fame): Lance brings the seized legendary items to your home in Pallet Town, including the Blue Orb. Take it to the pedestal at the north end of the chamber and answer Yes to “Use the Blue Orb to summon Kyogre?” → a wild Lv. 95 Kyogre. Notes: Kyogre is one attempt: catch it, knock it out or run away and it’s gone for good. Losing whites you out and you can retry. The ice walls melted during the scene come back afterwards; melt them yourself (previous entry) to reach Articuno and the pedestal. Articuno doesn’t come back after this scene until Lance’s visit.

Second Multi Battle Grunt is trainer 417. Pedestal ≈33,20. The post-game Articuno (L2672) and Kyogre (@2851) are WildBattle + CheckBattleWon; only a loss (→ L2283, white-out) keeps them, and running away counts as a win, as the emulator showed for other scripted wild battles (Electrode, Scyther, Groudon, Suicune).

Violet City: the stolen trophy and the Jade Orb (League HQ round 3)

Section titled “Violet City: the stolen trophy and the Jade Orb (League HQ round 3)”

Violet City Main quest

Where: Violet Gym, then the house at the south end of town (well south of the Gym), then back to the Gym.

Who gets it / when: when the Trainer Affairs desk sends you to check the Jade Orb (League HQ: the Trainer Affairs Department’s investigations, round 3).

How it works:

  1. Talk to Falkner in the Gym. A guard reports that the marathon runner’s golden trophy was stolen; Falkner leaves.
  2. Go to the runner’s house (south of town). A scene plays: Team Rocket took the trophy, then word arrives that former Leader Verdell has taken something from the Gym.
  3. Go back to the Gym and talk to Falkner: the Jade Orb is gone. This counts as the Violet lead for the HQ report.

Notes: while the trophy is missing, the runner won’t do his Rapidash request (next entry). It comes back after your next Hall of Fame entry.

Technical source (script files and flags)

script file 856 (script 2 L606–L14708, script 13; var 0x4078 7 → 8 → 10; flags 745, 1136, 1137, 2295), file 860 (script 7, L545–L862), file 822 L2494 clears 2295. House door ≈484,277.

Ilex Forest / Forest of Time: Sammy and the injured Celebi (League HQ round 3)

Section titled “Ilex Forest / Forest of Time: Sammy and the injured Celebi (League HQ round 3)”

Ilex Forest Main quest

Needs 10 Fresh Water and a lead Pokémon that can make light. The Sitrus Berries are never checked. Executive Marauder’s team is Lv. 89-90.

Where: the old ranger standing by the path into the Forest of Time, a few steps west of its entrance (just north of where Bugsy’s team stood during the bug hunt). The Forest of Time is the separate inner wood through that path.

Who gets it / when: during the League HQ investigations (League HQ: the Trainer Affairs Department’s investigations), round 3: “people in black in Ilex Forest”. The scene plays when you talk to the ranger at that stage. Before it she only tells the Celebi legend.

How it works:

  1. A boy, Sammy, falls out of the past. The ranger recognises him from 40 years ago and takes him into the Forest of Time.
  2. Follow them in. The injured Celebi needs 10 Fresh Water, 10 Sitrus Berries and a Pokémon that can make light. The light Pokémon must be your lead (first Pokémon that can battle): Staryu, Starmie, Chinchou, Lanturn, Ampharos, Volbeat or Clamperl.
  3. Come back and talk to Celebi or the ranger → “Use the prepared items?” → Yes. Celebi recovers (and your party is healed).
  4. Team Rocket’s Executive Marauder arrives with two Grunts. You hold off the Grunts in a Double Battle (Lv. 62–65) while the others hide.
  1. Follow the route above. At the end of the path, Marauder (Tyranitar and five more, Lv. 89–90) attacks. You battle him, then Celebi turns time back and you fight him again in a Double Battle against the same team, sent out two at a time.

Reward: Leaf Stone, Max Elixir, PP Max. The lead is reported to the League HQ desk.

Notes: every loss blacks you out, and you can retry. Only Fresh Water and the lead Pokémon are checked. The Sitrus Berries are never checked, and nothing is taken from your Bag (see Known issues).

Technical source (script files and flags)

script file 92 (script 16, L2672–L5384; var 0x40a2 = 17), script file 52 (Forest of Time: coord scripts 1 and 3 on var 0x4099 = 3 / 5; scripts 2, 4; L2751–L2883, L2885, L3574, L4359–L6148; L437–L2413; trainers 60+62, 763, 763+763; flag 2110). Ranger at ≈40,54 in Ilex Forest.

Forest of Time: the maze of clearings (continues Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City’s Forest of Time entries)

Section titled “Forest of Time: the maze of clearings (continues Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City’s Forest of Time entries)”

Main quest

Where: the Forest of Time, between its entrance clearing (where the ranger and Celebi are) and the upper forest with the shrine.

Who gets it / when: every time you go north through the forest: in the Sammy chapter (Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City, “Sammy and the injured Celebi”, step 5) and for the shrine (Shaymin, Celebi).

How it works: each clearing has six exits: bottom-middle, bottom-left, top-left, top-middle, top-right and bottom-right. Most send you to another clearing. The way through:

From Take the exit You arrive in
Entrance clearing top-middle clearing 2
Clearing 2 top-middle clearing 3
Clearing 3 top-right clearing 4
Clearing 4 top-left clearing 5
Clearing 5 top-middle the upper forest (shrine path)

Notes:

  • You arrive standing on an exit. Step off it before you choose the next one.
  • The top-left and top-right exits take you only when you walk sideways into them (left or right). Walking up onto them does nothing.
  • Wrong exits either loop you between clearings or drop you back at the entrance clearing.
  • While the ranger has sent you for the medicine in the Sammy chapter, the last exit sends you back to the entrance clearing instead. The same happens from the moment Bugsy gives you the Honey for his bug hunt in Ilex Forest, and it goes on after the hunt until the old ranger in Ilex Forest starts the Sammy chapter. There’s nothing for you at the shrine before that chapter anyway.
  • During the Sammy chapter, Sammy, Celebi and the ranger stand on the entrance clearing’s top-middle exit and block it until their scene moves on.
  • On rc7 and earlier, don’t enter the Forest of Time in the middle of Bugsy’s bug hunt: the two share their progress, and the wrong scene may play. Fixed in rc8 (see the known issue).
  • Tested in an emulator: the route above leads to the upper forest once the Sammy chapter is over. During the medicine errand, and after the bug hunt has ended, the last exit puts you back at the bottom of the entrance clearing.

Forest of Time: the shrine, Shaymin and Celebi (Gracidea; time of day)

Section titled “Forest of Time: the shrine, Shaymin and Celebi (Gracidea; time of day)”

Side quest

One Shaymin and one Celebi per game. Needs the Gracidea (an item ball in the Cinnabar lab) and a Leafeon, then a Shaymin lead for Celebi. Shaymin and Celebi are Lv. 90 gifts. Do first: Ilex Forest / Forest of Time: Sammy and the injured Celebi (League HQ round 3).

Where: the shrine at the north end of the Forest of Time.

Who gets it / when: after the Sammy chapter above. One Shaymin and one Celebi per game.

Getting there: use the same five-exit route through the forest to reach the shrine.

How it works:

  1. Shaymin: have the Gracidea in your Bag (an item ball in the Cinnabar Island lab; see Cinnabar Island: the Detrick lab lockdown), a Leafeon as your lead, and examine the shrine between 8:00 and 19:59. Shaymin appears → “Let Shaymin join your party?” → Yes: Shaymin Lv. 90.
  2. Celebi (after Shaymin): leave through Ilex Forest and come back first (Shaymin’s appearance closes the shrine for the rest of that visit). Then lead with Shaymin and examine the shrine between 20:00 and 7:59. Celebi appears → Yes: Celebi Lv. 90.
  3. With the wrong lead or at the wrong hour, the shrine only shows its description.

Reward: Shaymin and Celebi, both Lv. 90 gifts (no battle).

Notes: if you answer No, the Pokémon stays on the shrine: talk to it again to be asked again. Once you leave the Forest of Time, it only comes back after you walk back into Ilex Forest itself and return. Your party needs a free slot. The times go by the hour on your DS clock.

MooMoo Farm: the sick Miltank investigation (League HQ round 3; leads to the Dream World)

Section titled “MooMoo Farm: the sick Miltank investigation (League HQ round 3; leads to the Dream World)”

Route 39 Main quest

Only after the round-3 order. Do the Goldenrod love reading first if you want the romance route.

Where: the MooMoo Farm stable on Route 39. Go in by the right-hand door: the farmer stands a few steps ahead in the east room. The Miltank are in the west room (the left-hand door).

Who gets it / when: after the League HQ’s round-3 order, which sends you to MooMoo Farm about ghostly rumours (League HQ), after the Silver Conference. That order makes the Miltank sick. Until then they’re healthy: the farmer only greets you and talks about his milk, the milk stall and the farm’s seal girl are open, and the Sunflora old lady tells her story. So you can’t reach the Dream World earlier. Tested in an emulator.

How it works:

  1. Talk to the farmer. “Could you please help us find out why our Miltank are sick?” → Yes.
  2. Go into the west room and walk up to the back of the stable. Will and Karen of Team Rocket appear, open a rift into “that world” and vanish, and you’re pulled into the Dream World.
  3. The Dream World (partner choice, the Will and Karen Double Battle, the Lunar Wing and the way back) is in the Romance route central entry, step 2 and Dream World: Cresselia and Darkrai. Do the Goldenrod love reading before this if you want the romance route.
  4. Back at the farm, talk to the farmer again.

Reward: 1 Moomoo Milk (he says “this dozen”, but you only get one). The Miltank are healthy again for good, and the milk stall, the seal girl and the Sunflora old lady are back to normal.

Notes:

  • Moomoo Milk stall (the farmer’s daughter at the farm entrance, a few steps south of the stable doors): 1 for $1,000, 3 for $3,000, 8 for $8,000, 12 for $12,000. Closed while the Miltank are sick.
  • After your final Hall of Fame entry, examine the back wall of the west stable room to return to the Dream World (Dream World: Cresselia and Darkrai). You don’t need a Lunar Wing for this.
