Where to find it
- Scripted encounter (Lv. 5): Route 31.
After Elm gives Crystal her Pokédex at the Cherrygrove orphanage, follow Chikorita from Route 30 to Route 31’s Oddish girl, then the Bug Catcher. Talk to the Bug Catcher before Chikorita. Avoid speaking to Brock in Pewter Museum while his siblings’ quiz is unfinished until the Route 30 scene is done; that can remove Chikorita permanently. One chance: catching it, knocking it out or fleeing removes it; only losing allows a retry.
See the quest guide: Route 30 → Route 31: the wild Chikorita that challenges Trainers (catch it; one chance); Route 31: give Crystal your Flash TM (the way into Dark Cave); Route 46: Team Rocket's dig and Crystal taken hostage (story; romance choice; continues Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City's romance entry).
